I would love to hear how all of you handle the 'specials' for homeschooling. I know many of you join different programs with other homeschool kids, etc. I have planned a special for each day. We'll have music, vocabulary day, cooking, science, and art. For today, I'll share with you what Vocabulary Day is.
Each week I choose a new vocabulary word for the boys to learn. It is not a spelling word. I link it to a children's literature book, and then we talk about the word. I have a special 'vocabulary cape', that has the word on the back of it. The rest of the day and the week, we see how we can correctly use that word in a sentence.
I did this day when I taught first grade and it was so much fun! I can't wait to try it out at home!

No Denim Jumpers!
Several years ago, when the word 'homeschool' was mentioned, I immediately thought of denim jumpers, white keds tennis shoes, and seriously socially backward, and let's just say it, wierd families. Most certainly if you had told me that I would have become one of these families, much less embraced it heartily, I would have been so insulted I would never have spoken to you again.
Fast forward to today. We have lived in the PA/MD area for several years now and met some seriously cool homeschooled families. As the course of our lives have unfolded and we have started our own photography company, just entered the area of organized sports, and continued with all of the other activities we are involved in, homeschooling is most definitely the best fit for our lives.
Having taught for several years myself, I am SO excited about being the one to be able to teach my boys how to read, see that spark of learning grow, and tailor our unit studies to their interests. I am determined to stay as cool as possible, while we embark on this journey. I have to admit, right after we made our final decision to head in the direction, I ran to Banana Republic and bought two outfits, just to maintain my dignity.
So the purpose of this blog is to discuss all things relevant to homeschooling. We'll spin ideas for creative lesson plans, field trip ideas, socializing our children, and problem solve when questions arise.
So, for my first post question, I would love to hear some things you are organizing for the beginning of the year. Post your answers and we'll discuss it in the next blog post. Can't wait to get started on this journey!
